With millions of Floridians struggling with finances, the state issued a moratorium on evictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gov. Ron DeSantis lifted that in favor of a moratorium from the Centers for Disease Control in October. But the federal measure has loopholes that’s led to a surge in eviction, and the floodgates will really open when it expires Dec. 31. DeSantis should reinstate the state moratorium and extend it until Congress passes another relief bill. If he doesn’t, 2021 is going to be worse than 2020 for thousands of renters in Central Florida.
