Central Florida Y, Heart of Florida United Way get ‘one-in-a-lifetime’ donations from MacKenzie Scott
At least two Central Florida charities have received what are being called “once-in-a-lifetime” grants from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, the former wife of Jeff Bezos – the Heart of Florida United Way and the YMCA of Central Florida. Two days ago, Scott announced she was giving $4.2 billion in pandemic aid to 384 organizations across the country, including six-figure gifts to several Florida charities. Though neither the United Way nor the Y are saying yet how much they’ll get, in Gainesville, for instance, Santa Fe College reported it is receiving $40 million, the largest grant in its history.

Orange County’s slavish devotion to funding tourism development has long been a problem, and the International Drive tax district is a glaring example. Millions of dollars that could have gone to alleviating community needs has been siphoned to building projects for tourism, all under the guise that I Drive is “blighted.” It’s time for the county commission to end that slush fund and put the money where all taxpayers can benefit from it.
