WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reached an “agreement in principle” to raise the nation’s legal debt ceiling late Saturday as they raced to strike a deal to limit federal spending and avert a potentially disastrous U.S. default.

However, the agreement risks angering both Democratic and Republican sides with the concessions made to compromise. Negotiators agreed to some Republican demands for increased work requirements for recipients of food stamps that had sparked an uproar from House Democrats as a nonstarter.

Support from both parties will be needed to win congressional approval next week before the government’s projected June 5 debt default.

The Democratic president and Republican speaker reached the agreement after the two spoke earlier Saturday evening by phone. The country and the world have been watching and waiting for a resolution to a political standoff that threatened the U.S. and global economies. read more

Michael Sasso resigns from Disney World oversight board

Michael Sasso resigns from Disney World oversight board

Michael Sasso, a Central Florida attorney, has resigned from Gov. Ron DeSantis’ Disney World governing board he joined earlier this year.

Sasso was one of five members of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District’s Board of Supervisors, the governor-appointed board at the center of DeSantis’ dispute with Disney.

Sasso has not publicly given a reason for his resignation. On Tuesday, DeSantis elevated his wife, Meredith Sasso, to the Florida Supreme Court. She was the chief judge of the Sixth District Circuit Court of Appeal.

Spectrum News 13 first reported Sasso’s resignation on Friday night.

Sasso and the governor’s office did not immediately respond Saturday to requests for comment.

The tourism district has a lawsuit against Disney pending in state court that could potentially reach the state’s highest court.

That legal action was taken after Disney sued the district in federal court, alleging a “targeted campaign of government retaliation.” In the suit, Disney’s lawyers argue the corporation is being punished because it opposed the DeSantis-backed law that limited instruction about sexual orientation or gender identity in public schools, which critics dubbed “don’t say gay.” read more

Port Canaveral targets marina for future cruise terminal site

Port Canaveral targets marina for future cruise terminal site

Port Canaveral earned the title of world’s busiest cruise port besting Miami for the first time in 2022, but with only six terminals available, the port’s potential for growth is limited.

Plans to build a seventh have been in discussion for a while, and this week Port Canaveral CEO Capt. John Murray revealed just where they plan to stick it, focusing on space currently occupied by Bluepoints Marina on the south side of the port west of Cruise Terminal 1.

“I’m making it public today,” Murray said during the Canaveral Port Authority Commission meeting Wednesday noting that port officials have been analyzing all of the water-facing space, known as bulkhead, that allows for boats and ships to come alongside at the port.

“We’re reviewing all the surrounding property usage development, and the solution will focus on what we do,” Murray said, meaning the port should have businesses that need waterfront access. “We have not had a design or anything yet, but the solution will focus on optimizing our bulkhead and minimizing our community impact.” read more
