5 tips to keep social media from spurring you to overspend

5 tips to keep social media from spurring you to overspend

By Erin El Issa | NerdWallet

Scrolling social media may provide entertainment, catharsis or just a way to pass the time. It might also cause you to spend more than you can afford.

A new NerdWallet survey finds that 65% of Americans believe that social media has increased overspending. Here are five tips to keep social media scrolling from hurting your real-life finances.

1. Wish list and wait

According to the survey, 18% of Americans have made a purchase because of something they saw on social media that they regret making. Impulse buying is easy on social media, particularly when you purchase from within the app. One way to combat this and possibly avoid regret? Wish list and wait.

Create a list of anything and everything you come across on social media that you want to buy. And then wait to purchase. How long you wait is up to you — maybe it’s a month or just 24 hours. You might still choose to purchase the item ultimately, but when you put time between wanting and buying something, you may find that the desire to own the item dissipates. Allow the shine to wear off and then make the decision to buy or not buy with a clear head. read more

Toyota recalls certain 2023 model year vehicles for injury risks

Toyota recalls certain 2023 model year vehicles for injury risks

Toyota Motor Corp. said it is recalling certain 2023 model year Toyota Corolla, Corolla Cross, Corolla Cross hybrid, Highlander, Highlander hybrid, Tacoma, Lexus RX and RX hybrid and 2024 model year NX and NX hybrid vehicles.

Toyota spokesperson Josh Burns on Wednesday said about 118,000 vehicles are included, “with approximately 110,000 of those in the U.S.”

In affected vehicles, the spiral cable assembly in the steering column may lose electrical connection on the circuit controlling the driver’s airbag.

If loss of electrical connection occurs, the airbag warning light will illuminate, and the driver’s airbag may not deploy in a crash. Vehicles will not comply with certain federal motor vehicle safety requirements as a result, which may increase risk of injury to the driver in a crash.

Toyota declined to comment on injuries, accidents or deaths that could have resulted from the safety issue.

For all recalled vehicles, Toyota and Lexus dealers will inspect the serial number of the spiral cable and replace it with a new cable if necessary. Both procedures are available at no cost to customers. read more

Swine & Sons to take over Milkhouse menu, head to Las Vegas with Foxtail Coffee

Swine & Sons to take over Milkhouse menu, head to Las Vegas with Foxtail Coffee

What happens in Orlando doesn’t stay in Orlando. How do we know? Because Foxtail Coffee, which moved across the Florida state line into Georgia in 2021, is about to open its first-ever store in Las Vegas. And it’s bringing another Winter Park-founded business along to strengthen the odds on the gamble.

Swine & Sons, which first partnered with Foxtail last year when it moved into the Farmhouse location to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner (as well as craft the custom BarSwine menu for The Courtesy Bar), will be serving up the same Southern-inspired fare for Las Vegans with Chef/Owner Alexia Gawlak heading up ops.

“A lot of what we’ve leaned on in the past year as our partnership has flourished is [Alexia’s] great culinary background,” Foxtail founder Alex Tchekmeian told the Orlando Sentinel, noting the Swine & Sons menu’s success and popularity. “So, both brands will travel out to Nevada together.”

Two Greater Las Vegas locations — in Henderson and Summerlin — already have been secured, with the former, its kitchen under Gawlak’s direction, to open first. read more

“Stranger Things” is returning to Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights. The fourth season of the Netflix series will be showcased in a haunted house that includes the villanous Vecna character and its “blood-red mindscape,” Universal Orlando announced Thursday.

In addition, Frequent Fear Passes and other multinight tickets are now on sale on the event’s website.

Universal also revealed that four dates have been added to this year’s HHN, bringing the event to a total of 48 evenings. Visitors will now be able to experience Horror Nights through Nov. 4.

The 2023 edition of the “Stranger Things” house will include Hawkins Lab, Creel House, demobats, Eleven and other characters, Universal said.

“We’re excited for our fans to live Vecna’s curse as we re-create the iconic and terrifying moments from the show,” said Lora Sauls, assistant director, creative development and show direction at Universal Orlando Resort, in a news release.

The first season of “Stranger Things” was featured in a haunted house in 2018, and its second and third seasons were combined in a 2019 HHN house. read more
