Theme Park Rangers Radar: SeaWorld dance party, Haunted Mansion hatbox, Tiana watch 2023

Theme Park Rangers Radar detected movement — but no sound — at a SeaWorld Orlando dance party, then spent time at Magic Kingdom thinking about future developments at Haunted Mansion and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Anyone seen a hatbox ghost around here?

Radar is a weekly roundup of news and notes from Central Florida’s theme parks and attractions. It is posted on OrlandoSentinel.com on Wednesdays.

Sound of silence

A new offering at SeaWorld Orlando isn’t making much noise. Actually, it’s not making any noise at all.  The park has added a “silent DJ party” to its Summer Spectacular entertainment lineup for a limited time.

The concept has been around for awhile.  Participants wear headphones to enjoy the dance music; non-participants are blissfully unaware. And no one is likely to taunt them to “Make some nooooooise.”

It makes for interesting visuals as those united by the beat simultaneously do the moves to, let’s say “Cha Cha Slide,” leaving observers to guess what the song is. (Right foot, two stomps is a clue, y’all.) read more

Hearing on DeSantis-Disney suit set for Friday in Orlando

Hearing on DeSantis-Disney suit set for Friday in Orlando

An Orange County circuit judge this week will hear arguments on a request by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts to toss out a lawsuit filed by a revamped special district amid a feud between Gov. Ron DeSantis and the entertainment giant.

Judge Margaret Schreiber will face a tangle of legal issues Friday as she considers Disney’s request to dismiss — or at least put on hold — a lawsuit filed in May by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District.

DeSantis in February signed a law that established the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District as a successor to the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which Disney had essentially controlled for decades. DeSantis also appointed board members for the revamped district.

In the lawsuit, the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District is seeking a ruling that development agreements reached by Disney and the former Reedy Creek board are “null and void.” The agreements were approved shortly before the switch to the Central Florida Tourism Oversight board. read more
