White House preparing for government shutdown as House Republicans lack a viable endgame for funding

White House preparing for government shutdown as House Republicans lack a viable endgame for funding

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House on Friday directed federal agencies to get ready for a shutdown after House Republicans left town for the weekend with no viable plan to keep the government funded and avert politically and economically costly disruption of federal services.

A federal shutdown after Sept. 30 seems all but certain unless Speaker Kevin McCarthy can persuade his rebellious hard-right flank of Republicans to allow Congress to approve a temporary funding measure to prevent closures as talks continue. Instead, he’s launched a much more ambitious plan to try to start passing multiple funding bills once the House returns Tuesday, with just five days to resolve the standoff.

“We got members working, and hopefully we’ll be able to move forward on Tuesday to pass these bills,” McCarthy, R-Calif., told reporters at the Capitol.

McCarthy signaled his preference for avoiding a closure, but a hard-right flank of his House majority has effectively seized control. “I still believe if you shut down you’re in a weaker position,” he said. read more

Disney World names new ambassadors for 2024, 2025

Disney World names new ambassadors for 2024, 2025

A new set of official ambassadors for Walt Disney World was introduced Friday morning. Cast members Serena Arvizu and Shannon Smith-Conrad will serve in the roles in 2024 and 2025.

Smith-Conrad currently works with the professional recruitment team of the resort, and Arvizu comes from the supplier diversity program. Both have roots in the Disney College Program: Smith-Conrad started with parking-lot duties at Disneyland Resort in California followed by a second stint at Epcot’s Mission: Space, and Arvizu was a seater at the Crystal Palace restaurant inside Magic Kingdom.

“When I was real little itty-bitty I knew I wanted to work at Disney. I went on Google and Googled ‘Disney jobs’ and found the Disney College Program,” said Arvizu, who grew up in Arizona, after Friday’s announcement.

Ambassadors serve as the public face of Disney World and represent and support the resort’s 75,000 employees. The program has roots with Walt Disney, who instituted the program ahead of Disneyland’s 10th anniversary in 1965. read more

Fire-damaged Carnival Freedom leaves Port Canaveral to get a new ‘whale tail’

Fire-damaged Carnival Freedom leaves Port Canaveral to get a new ‘whale tail’

A Carnival Cruise Line ship that sails out of Port Canaveral has been missing its most iconic feature for more than a year after its smokestack funnel became engulfed in flames.

While the cruise line was able to get the ship fixed functionally soon after, it has been sailing without the signature “whale tail” that is so readily identifiable among the line’s fleet.

On Thursday, the ship finally left Port Canaveral for a proper facelift as part of its scheduled dry dock visit to the shipyards in Cadiz, Spain. Ships head in for a required dry dock every five years under international maritime law, during which cruise lines often install new features.

FAREWELL CARNIVAL FREEDOM – TEMPORARILY: We bid a temporary fond farewell to one of our homeported ships, the @CarnivalCruise Line Freedom. She has a scheduled beauty appointment (aka drydock) for a new paint job and a new whale tail. We wish her best on her journey and plan… pic.twitter.com/9cgzsU59Vx
