History of the Fort Myers River District

The Fort Myers River District is steeped in history, dating back to its time as a military fort and trading post in the 1800s. Later, it became a winter getaway for some of the most influential figures in American history, including Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. The district’s beautifully preserved buildings give it a timeless feel, and it’s one of the reasons I love spending time here.

The Edison and Ford Winter Estates are probably the most iconic historical landmarks in the area. These 20-acre estates, which include lush botanical gardens and historic homes, offer visitors a fascinating glimpse into the lives of two of America’s greatest inventors. I love visiting the estates in the late afternoon, when the light filters through the gardens in such a magical way—it’s one of the most peaceful spots in Downtown Fort Myers.
