Magical Dining raises record amount for Orange County charities
Visit Orlando announced today the donation of $352,218 to Orange County charities supporting families experiencing hardship in Central Florida from funds raised through the tourism association’s Magical Dining program, a record-breaking total and a 30 percent increase over 2023.
“As we close the 19th year of Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining, we’re proud to see the growth of Orlando’s culinary scene and the support it gives our local businesses,” said Casandra Matej, president and CEO of Visit Orlando.
“This was a record-setting year in more ways than one,” said Matej. “Not only did we have 150 participating restaurants, but we also raised more than $350,000 for The Mustard Seed of Central Florida and Orange County charities in our six commissioned districts.”
Conceived nearly 20 years ago as a way to boost business during traditionally slow months, Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining has since grown to not only incorporate a charity element but lean hard into celebrating what is Central Florida’s increasingly vibrant dining scene — and encourage locals to step out of their bubbles and try new venues.
Featuring $40 and $60 three-course, prix fixe menus at its participating restaurants, $1 and $2 from each meal sold is going directly to local charities
Since launching in 2019, the program has raised more than $2.9 million for local nonprofits. This year’s primary beneficiary, The Mustard Seed of Central Florida, helps families recover from hardship while promoting environmental sustainability.
In addition, Visit Orlando awarded $3,000 to six other charities: Hope Along the Way (supporting families through life’s challenges), New Image Youth Center (empowering youth with educational resources), Next Step Foundation (promoting paralysis recovery and wellness in the community), United Against Poverty (offering tools to improve lives and livelihoods), WASH Foundation (advocating for clean water and sustainable practices) and CDA “WE Care” (building strong, compassionate communities).
“We’re truly thankful to our local community and visitors from beyond Orlando for supporting these nonprofits through their participation in Magical Dining,” Erick Hawkins, chief administrative officer for Orlando Health and Visit Orlando board member, said in a news release. “With this record-breaking year, we’re especially excited to continue seeing how this extraordinary program’s impact enhances the health and wellness of our community.”
It also positively impacts local restaurants.
Visit Orlando recognized four of its participants as 2024’s top performers: Seasons 52 (overall winner), Summer House on the Lake (top performing new restaurant, $40 menu), Chayote Barrio Kitchen (top performing new restaurant, $60 menu) and The Oceanaire Seafood Room (largest increase in meals served year over year).’
Of further interest to the local restaurant community, one of its most recognizable faces, Se7enbites’ chef/owner Trina Gregory, was among the names announced as new Visit Orlando board members.
“I intend to be a face for small business owners in my work with Visit Orlando,” said Gregory just minutes after the announcement. “And ensure that local businesses are at the forefront of the growth expected for tourism and travel. I’m excited to represent my community and for another opportunity to help grow my beloved Orlando.”
Matej noted in a news release that Magical Dining not only shines a spotlight on the city’s culinary talent, but strengthens the community in its support of local causes.
“This year’s program was our largest to date, with 150 restaurants participating, including 25 new venues and nine Michelin Guide honorees — and the results are evident with the donation raised,” she said. “We are deeply grateful to all diners and restaurant partners whose contributions are transforming lives and helping build a sustainable future in Central Florida.”
