Universal Orlando reveals design for specialty license plate

Universal Orlando Resort has unveiled the design for a potential specialty license plate in Florida that would feature its signature Universal globe and benefit the nonprofit agency Give Kids the World.

The plate would feature the globe structure, seen in real life near the entrance to Universal Studios theme park, on a blackened, starry background, with “Florida” printed across the top in gold, “Universal Orlando Resort” in white at the bottom and with white letters and numbers.

The plate is now available for presale purchase. Drivers of Florida-registered vehicles can purchase vouchers online or at tax collector and tag agency offices across the state.  The cost for the vouchers is $33, which does not include the regular annual plate fees. Production of the plates would not begin until 3,000 pre-sale vouchers are purchased.

“We are so excited to build on our longstanding, treasured partnership with Give Kids the World in support of its incredible mission in this new and unique way,” said Karen Irwin, president and chief operating officer of Universal Orlando, in a news release.

Give Kids the World, based in Kissimmee, provides free vacations at its resort to children with critical illnesses and their families.

“This specialty plate will generate tremendous awareness of our mission and also provide precious funds so that we may continue our promise to children whose one wish is to experience all the adventure that Central Florida has to offer,” Pamela Landwirth, president and CEO of Give Kids the World, said in the news release.

Floridians can choose between more than 100 specialty plates, although state law currently caps the total at 135. Last month, five organizations were removed from the lineup for failing to maintain a 3,000-customer base. No longer available are plates for Boy Scouts of America, Special Olympics and Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches or the “Keep Kids Drug Free” option and the “A State of Vision” plate, which supported organizations that served the blind and visually impaired.

Other plates currently in “presale” status include “boating capital of the world,” Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Down Syndrome Awareness, beekeepers, gopher tortoises, the Inter Miami soccer club and the Villages.

A Florida plate for Walt Disney World, which features the silhouette of  Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom theme park, benefits Make-A-Wish Central and Northern Florida.  The five most popular plates in Orange County are for UCF, Disney World, University of Florida, Endless Summer and sea turtles.  Endless Summer tops the state count overall with nearly 139,000 plates in circulation.
