Carnival Cruise Line to send new ship to Port Canaveral

Carnival Cruise Line announced Sunday details on new ships including its next sister ship to Carnival’s Mardi Gras coming to Port Canaveral.

Carnival Festivale will be the fourth of the line’s Excel-class ships debuting in the spring of 2027 and taking over Mardi Gras’ longer Caribbean itineraries. Mardi Gras will remain at the port but shift to short three- and four-night Bahamas voyages.

“As new ships are introduced, this will allow us to upgrade capacity and hardware in key markets, with a particular focus on short cruises,” said Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. “With short cruises on Mardi Gras, our guests who may not have the time to take a weeklong vacation can experience all the amazing features of our Excel class.”

Similar to 2021’s Mardi Gras, 2022’s Carnival Celebration and 2023’s Carnival Jubilee, Carnival Festivale is being named after one of the cruise line’s original vessels, the TSS Festivale, which it converted from an ocean liner and began sailing in 1978.

A fifth Excel-class ship sailing in 2028 will similarly be named Carnival Tropicale, taking over the name used on the first ship built for Carnival, which debuted in 1982 and was first one featuring the iconic whale-tail funnel design.

The homeport for Carnival Tropicale was not revealed.

For Festivale, the line is debuting some new spaces including an outdoor zone called Sunsation Point, a family-centric area with a water park named Carnival Waterworks Ultra.

The water park will replace the BOLT roller coaster found on the first three Excel-class ships.

It will have six slides including two family raft slides. Some slides will cater to guests as short as 36 inches while also offering two splash pads, spray toys and a baby splash area. The area will also have a treehouse-themed adventure trail, sports court, ropes course, jogging track, miniature golf course, outdoor games and themed arcade.

After dark, the area will get a nightlife makeover with evening events, extended water park hours and a DJ.

Two other new spaces promise to lean into music-themed venues.

“One zone is inspired by the process of creating music, using cutting-edge media, interactive moments, immersive sound and transformative lighting to activate it throughout the cruise, while the other zone on Deck 8 symbolizes the energetic vibes of outdoor music performances,” according to a press release.

Another change coming to the ship is the removal of the dedicated cabin space called Family Harbor. Instead, the line is increasing to 1,000 the number of interconnected staterooms, 70% more compared to its sister ships. The ship is also giving a dedicated space for its toddler program called Carnival Turtles, aimed at guests ages 6 months to 2 years.

New dining options on board will be another concept from Emeril Lagasse and a replacement for Chinese-Mexican fusion offering ChiBang! found on its sister ships. It will retain some dining venues including Guy’s Burger Joint, Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse and Big Chicken.

Duffy also looked beyond the next Excel-class ships for what will be its largest class, three new vessels expected in 2029, 2031 and 2033, for now being referred to as Project Ace. Similar to Royal Caribbean’s Oasis- and Icon-class vessels and MSC Cruises’ World class, the Project Ace ships will come in at around 230,000 gross tons and have more than 3,000 staterooms able to carry more than 8,000 passengers at full capacity.

“These ships clearly represent the next generation of Fun ships. They will be experiences unto themselves, and, partnered with itineraries that call in part on our exclusive destinations, will provide amazing cruise vacations for guests,” said Duffy. “This class will introduce new dining outlets, entertainment, and re-imagined outer deck amenities.”

Duffy also detailed retheming of some of its destinations. Already set to open its first private Bahamas destination, Celebration Key, the line will also expand Half Moon Cay, which is shares with sister line Holland America. The addition of a pier in 2026 will allow Carnival’s largest ships to dock.

Also in 2026, what is now known as Mahogany Bay, the line’s private destination in Roatan, Honduras, will be renamed Isla Tropicale, and have new features such as a pool with a swim-up bar and cabanas. Future plans include adding an expanded beach and beach club.
