Atlantic Music Center opens Orlando store with 40 pianos, art gallery space

A piano store now open in Orlando is finding it has the keys for success in reaching a Central Florida audience with 40 pianos to offer, plus visual art on the walls.

Melbourne-based Atlantic Music Center, which has the largest piano store in Florida, is expanding with an Ivanhoe Village location, which will double as an art gallery space with quarterly shows. The store is managed by Connor Mahoney and Will Benton, the director of FAVO (Faith Arts Village Orlando). As a church musician and artist, Benton was approached by Brian Gatchell, the company’s president and owner, about opening an inland Central Florida location.

“We’ve done business all over Florida. Our location in Melbourne is the largest showroom in Florida. We have about 200 pianos there on the floor,” Mahoney said. “This is going to be a boutique shop. We’re the largest rebuilder of pianos in the Southeast, and we do a lot of rebuilding in Melbourne. We’re going to bring some of our best instruments to the Orlando location.”

The store carries both new and used pianos, including Kawai, Yamaha, Baldwin and rare brands with fine craftsmanship imported from Europe, including Sauter, Schimmel and Fazioli. One room will be dedicated to “player pianos,” which have a self-playing feature, and one is home to used and meticulously restored Steinway pianos.

“We’re thrilled to expand to Orlando and bring our top-tier service closer to customers in Central Florida,” Gatchell said in a news release. “They’ve already been driving to Melbourne. Now we can make things a little easier on them.”

Some of the more affordable instruments start around $2,000-$3,000 and range upward into the hundreds of thousands.

“We have lots of different clientele, but we know we service a broad variety of beginning students to teaching professionals and pianists or home hobbyists,” Mahoney said.

While the store won’t be used for teaching, it will be open for piano recitals, concerts and events when new art is unveiled on the walls. The store will celebrate its grand opening event on Nov. 12.

“As Brian says, it’s going to be the candy store for pianos. We’re going to have a lot of really interesting stuff here,” Benton said.
