The two Japanese automakers announced the joint project, to produce a pair of coming subcompact crossovers, in 2018. Production is due to begin next year. They did not fully explain the added investment, other than to say it was to incorporate more “cutting-edge manufacturing technologies” into its assembly line and improve worker training.

Daimler settles U.S. probe into diesel emissions

The $1.5 billion settlement with the Justice Department, EPA and California Air Resources Board covers about 250,000 Mercedes-Benz light vehicles and vans. The automaker also will pay about $700 million to settle class-action litigation brought by consumers.
