Trump threatens retaliatory 200% tariff on European wine after EU proposes American whiskey tariff

Trump threatens retaliatory 200% tariff on European wine after EU proposes American whiskey tariff

By AAMER MADHANI, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened a 200% tariff on European wine, Champagne and spirits if the European Union goes forward with a planned tariff on American whiskey.

The European tariff, which was unveiled in response to steel and aluminum tariffs by the U.S. administration, was expected to go into effect on April 1.

But Trump, in a morning social media post, vowed a new escalation in his trade war if the EU pushes ahead with the planned 50% tariff on American whiskey.

“If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES,” Trump wrote. “This will be great for the Wine and Champagne businesses in the U.S.”

US stocks fall as Trump’s latest tariff threat offsets good news on the economy

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. stock market is falling Thursday, even after getting a double-shot of encouraging news on the economy. President Donald Trump keeps upping the stakes in his trade war, with his most recent threat to tax wines and other alcohol coming from Europe.

The S&P 500 was down 0.8% in morning trading, coming off a dizzying stretch where it set a record and then briefly tumbled as much as 10% from the mark within just a few weeks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 192 points, or 0.5%, as of 10 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 1.5% lower.

Stocks have been turbulent because of questions about how much pain Trump will let the economy endure through tariffs and other policies in order to reshape the country and world as he wants. He’s said he wants manufacturing jobs back in the United States, along with a smaller U.S. government workforce and other fundamental changes.

Trump on Thursday said he would put 200% tariffs on European wine and champagne if the European Union doesn’t roll back a “nasty” tariff it placed on U.S. whiskey. The European Union announced that move on Wednesday, in response to U.S. tariffs on European steel and aluminum that kicked in earlier in the day. read more

United Launch Alliance waits on Space Force to certify Vulcan

United Launch Alliance waits on Space Force to certify Vulcan

Despite not having launched anything in more than five months, United Launch Alliance still expects to fly around 12 missions this year. But it’s still waiting on the Space Force to certify its new Vulcan rocket for national security launches.

Vulcan flew twice in 2024, but the second mission had a rough ride to space. Just after launch, one of the nozzles sheared off one the two attached solid rocket boosters provided by Northrop Grumman. The Vulcan’s main BE-4 engines, built by Blue Origin, were powerful enough to compensate for the booster damage on flight, but the event has been the primary culprit for the delay in certification.

“They have all the data. We’ve completed everything that you’re supposed to do. We’ve submitted that back last month,” said ULA President and CEO Tory Bruno on Wednesday during a media roundtable discussion. “Typically, it’s not a very long process in the past when vehicles are certified, so they have it.”

Bruno said the nozzle damage was due to a manufacturing defect that has since been corrected. read more

Fewer Americans file for jobless claims last week, signaling a still-healthy US labor market

Fewer Americans file for jobless claims last week, signaling a still-healthy US labor market

By MATT OTT, Associated Press Business Writer

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell slightly last week, indicating a still-healthy U.S. labor market.

U.S. jobless claims filings fell by 2,000 to 220,000 for the week ending March 8, the Labor Department said Thursday. That’s fewer than the 226,000 new applications analysts forecast.

It’s not clear when job cuts ordered by the Department of Government Efficiency will show up in the weekly layoffs report, though some analysts expect them to surface in data in the coming weeks.

Those layoffs are part of the Trump administration’s efforts to shrink the size of the federal workforce through billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.

Senior U.S. officials set the government downsizing in motion weeks ago via a memo dramatically expanding President Donald Trump’s efforts to scale back the workforce. Thousands of probationary employees have already been fired, and now the Republican administration is turning its attention to career officials with civil service protection. read more
