Health insurers promise to improve coverage reviews that prompt delays and complaints

By TOM MURPHY, AP Health Writer

The nation’s major health insurers are promising to scale back and improve a widely despised practice that leads to care delays and complications.

UnitedHealthcare, CVS Health’s Aetna and dozens of other insurers say they plan to reduce the scope of health care claims subject to prior authorization, standardize parts of the process and expand responses done in real time.

Prior authorization means insurers require approval before they’ll cover medical care, a prescription or a service like an imaging exam. Insurers say they do this to guard against care overuse and to make sure patients get the right treatment.

But doctors say the practice has grown in scope and complication, leading to frequent care delays. The fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December prompted many people to vent their frustrations with coverage issues like prior authorization.

Dr. Mehmet Oz called the practice “a pox on the system” that hikes administrative costs during his Senate confirmation hearing in March to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. read more

Stocks rally and oil tumbles as Wall Street hopes for a limited retaliation after US strikes on Iran

Stocks rally and oil tumbles as Wall Street hopes for a limited retaliation after US strikes on Iran

By STAN CHOE, ELAINE KURTENBACH and BERNARD CONDON, AP Business Writers

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rallied, and the price of oil tumbled Monday on hopes that Iran will not disrupt the global flow of crude, something that would hurt economies worldwide but also its own, following the United States’ bunker-busting entry into its war with Israel.

The S&P 500 climbed 1%, coming off a week where stock prices had jumped up and down on worries about the conflict potentially escalating. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 374 points, or 0.9%, and the Nasdaq composite gained 0.9%.

The price of oil initially jumped 6% after trading began Sunday night, a signal of rising worries as investors got their first chance to react to the U.S. bombings. But it quickly erased all those gains and swung to a sharp loss as the focus shifted from what the U.S. military did to how Iran would react.

ULA manages 2nd launch of year hours after SpaceX’s 50th

United Launch Alliance took a week to reset, but was able to send up its second launch of the year, carrying more Amazon satellites to compete with SpaceX’s Starlink internet constellation. The launch came just hours after SpaceX sent up its 50th rocket from the Space Coast in 2025.

An Atlas V rocket on the Kuiper-2 mission with 27 internet satellites lifted off at 6:54 a.m. from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station’s Space Launch Complex 41.

“Hot, straight, and normal,” ULA President and CEO Tory Bruno said on X moments after launch on X.

A week prior, ULA had scrubbed its earlier launch attempt because of bad temperature readings on the rocket related to a gaseous nitrogen purge line.

SpaceX earlier launch from the Space Coast was its 76th overall this year including California flights. A Falcon 9 lifted off from Canaveral’s nearby Space Launch Complex 40 at 1:58 a.m. with 27 Starlink satellites. The first-stage booster flew for the 25th time, landing on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas. read more

Clermont developer ditching distillery plans, seeking to rezone

Clermont developer ditching distillery plans, seeking to rezone

Over five years after developers Tom and Keith Kovatch announced plans to open a distillery and tasting room in Clermont, the first of its kind in the area, plans for the project have been scrapped.

Back in November 2019, the pair signed on to develop the vacant six-acre site of a former steel fabrication plant at the intersection of State Road 50 and 12th Street in Clermont. They intended to partner with Heritage Distilling, an award-winning Washington state craft operation.

At the time, the Clermont City Council approved a zoning change from M-1 industrial to PUD, or Planned Unit Development, allowing the Heritage Square project to move forward with master plans calling for up to six buildings and a maximum of 60,000 square feet of space.

But the changes wrought by the COVID pandemic — and state restrictions on the amount of distilled spirits that could be produced — led developers to scuttle the original plan, Tom Kovatch said. Now they are looking to rezone the property for general commercial use, which may be a steep climb, according to a report in GrowthSpotter. read more

Uber, Lyft oppose some bills that aim to prevent assaults during rides

Uber, Lyft oppose some bills that aim to prevent assaults during rides

By Madyson Fitzgerald, Stateline.org

While on her way home from a co-working space in Denver last year, Colorado state Rep. Jenny Willford says she was sexually assaulted by her Lyft driver.

In her lawsuit filed against Lyft in January, Willford alleges she was “subjected to unwelcome, nonconsensual sexual contact, touching” and lewd comments during the ride.

Willford was picked up by a different driver than the person identified in the Lyft app, according to the suit.

Her experience — and those that other survivors shared with her after hearing her story — prompted Willford, a Democrat, to introduce legislation this year that aimed to require safety measures for both riders and drivers using ridesharing apps.

“In my mind, all of these things are very basic when it comes to safety,” Willford said. “They’re just so common sense that it’s been really disheartening and frustrating to me that Uber … threatened to leave the state if the bill becomes law.”

Her bill would have required rideshare companies to conduct more regular background checks for drivers, to create a program for passengers or drivers who want to audio or video record their rides and to develop other safety policies. read more
