Disney Cruise Line taps ‘Moana’ for original show on Disney Treasure

Disney Cruise Line’s new ship Disney Treasure may be sailing the Caribbean when it debuts next year, but it’ll be channeling the South Pacific with its marquee original stage show based on the film “Moana.”

The sister ship to Disney Wish is set to arrive to Port Canaveral in December 2024, and the cruise line had only revealed two of the three shows to be featured during its seven-night itineraries — versions of “Beauty and the Beast” and “Disney Seas the Adventure” — both of which can be seen on other DCL ships.

The Treasure’s unique offering, though, is titled “Disney The Tale of Moana” based on the 2016 movie that showcased the musical range of Auli’i Cravalho as Moana and Dewayne “The Rock” Johnson as the demigod Maui. It has songs like “How Far I’ll Go,” “We Know the Way” and “You’re Welcome,” composed by a team that included Lin Manuel-Miranda during the height of his “Hamilton” success.

It’s the first time the character will get a full stage production at land or on sea, although Moana is the centerpiece of a new attraction of Walt Disney World’s Epcot theme park as well.

“The show will follow Moana as she embarks on an incredible journey to save her island after she is chosen by the ocean to restore the heart of Te Fiti,” according to a post on the Disney Parks Blog. “Fans of the original film will recognize many beloved characters like Gramma Tala, Maui and Tamatoa when they appear on stage, as well as songs from the film’s iconic soundtrack.”

The post gets ahead of a call for casting soon to appear on DisneyAuditions.com, but more details about the show have yet to be revealed.

It’s not the first time a major Disney character got its feet wet for a stage show on a cruise line first. The film “Tangled” which told the story of Rapunzel got its stage debut on Disney Magic in 2015 and Disney’s “Frozen” had a unique show come to Disney Wonder in 2017. Other stage shows in the fleet include shows based on the “The Little Mermaid” that debuted on Disney Wish, and “Aladdin” that’s performed on both Wish and Disney Fantasy.

Disney Cruise Line queues up old and new features for new ship Disney Treasure

The second of three ships in the Wish class, the 144,000-gross-ton, 4,000-passenger vessel is currently under construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

Disney Treasure’s maiden voyage is set for Dec. 21, 2024, sailing alternating eastern and western Caribbean itineraries out of Port Canaveral. Disney Wish will keep sailing the shorter three- and four-night Bahamas trips.

Disney Wish debuted out of Port Canaveral in summer 2022, the first new ship for DCL’s growing fleet in a decade. Its first ships Disney Magic and Wonder debuted in 1998 and 1999 followed by 2011’s Disney Dream and 2012’s Disney Fantasy. A third Wish-class ship that has yet to be named and an Asian-bound ship named Disney Adventure will grow the fleet to eight vessels by the end of 2025.
