Gift Guide: Rent the Science Center, shirt up, pass the salt and pepper

Private star-gazing: Orlando Science Center offers private experiences inside its observatory for up to 10 people.  Your group gets quality time in the museum’s top-floor facility, as well as its inflatable planetarium, with a space enthusiast provided by the science center.

The evening starts with a digital projection system that shows off planets, stars and constellations on the ceiling of an inflatable dome.

Later, in the observatory, different telescopes — including the giant refractor model — are used for looking into the actual cosmos as well as the nearby Orlando skyline. The objects seen vary with dates and weather conditions (This is a rain-or-shine reservation.)

The experience is available at multiple times on Friday and Saturday evenings through March 9. The cost is $300 per outing ($275 for science center members). Beware, the private stargazing experiences have sold out the past two years.  For registration or more information, go to OSC.org or email groups@osc.org.

Theme-park T’s: T-shirts are a staple theme-park souvenir, but the inventories have become increasingly more ride-specific. We picked out three that represent major attractions that debuted in 2023 and yet are somewhat subtle and might require a second glance. It gets a little meta.

Magic Kingdom introduced Tron Lightcycle / Run coaster in February, and among the many T-shirt options is a bright orange one that touts Flynn’s, an ’80s arcade directly tied to the “Tron” movie franchise. Wearers are signaling that they are part of Flynn’s top score club. (Price: $39.99.)

SeaWorld Orlando debuted its Pipeline: The Surf Coaster in May. In addition to straightforward shirts, the park offers a top with a high surf warning and a big wave caution sign. “If in doubt, don’t go out,” the white tee reads.  Small SeaWorld and coaster logos appear below. (Price: $29.99.)

Universal Studios opened Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast in August. The park concentrated its merchandise on the story within the story of the stand-up, moving sidewalk attraction. There are options featuring the Vicious 6 characters, but we were drawn to the simpler, sporty shirt with the logo of Villain-Con, the setting of the attraction and checkered-flag sleeves.  (Price: $35.)

Shake it up: Santa and Mrs. Claus are spicing things up in the form of salt and pepper shakers sold at Publix. The limited-edition set is reminiscent of the pilgrim-themed couple that has been popular for years, enough to be featured in television commercials.

If you’re a “Never Removed From Box” sort of collector, the Clauses come in a red box featuring a green Publix logo with white snowflakes and the designation of “season’s greeters.”  They’re sold for $5.99.
