Man gets 2 years for accusing girlfriend of having bomb on flight out of Orlando
A Rhode Island man was sentenced Wednesday to two years in federal prison for falsely accusing his girlfriend of bringing a bomb onto their flight out of Orlando, according to court records.
Evan Sims, 41, agreed to plead guilty to one count of false information or threats concerning aircraft as part of a March deal with prosecutors. He will also pay the airline $25,000, according to a press release. He was sentenced In Jacksonville where he’s remained in custody since his arrest.
Sims was traveling Dec. 5 on a Breeze Airways flight from Orlando International Airport to Providence, Rhode Island with his girlfriend. Passengers heard the two arguing on the plane before takeoff.
Sims was saying he’d never heard of the airline before and was hoping the plane wouldn’t “go down” and that they’d be “gone with the wind,” according to court records. The girlfriend repeatedly told him that she was breaking up with him and to leave her alone. She later stated that Sims poured a drink on her and cursed at her.

Sims continued making comments during the airline safety briefing about the plane’s emergency doors and said he hoped they wouldn’t have to use the plane’s windows, according to records. He also asked the flight crew about the plane’s emergency life raft.
Several passengers were uncomfortable and asked to move seats but could not because the plane was already taxiing, court records said. While the plane was in takeoff, Sims partially stood up in his seat and said he wanted to get off the plane. The crew intended to move his girlfriend to a different seat to resolve the situation.
Sims then stated “approximately” twice that his girlfriend brought a bomb on the plane, according to court records. The flight was then diverted to Jacksonville. Court records said Sims was apparently smirking when the announcement was made. He and this girlfriend were detained.
In an interview with the FBI, Sims said he has a dark sense of humor and was making jokes. He said he made the comments about the plane going down because he was nervous about flying and his girlfriend broke up with him.
He denied he said the word “bomb” but instead said “calm” and that if he said it on accident he could have used the word once but “definitely not twice”. He then asked near the end of the interview: “How f—ed am I?”
