NCL names new Miami-bound cruise ship Norwegian Luna

Norwegian Cruise Line on Wednesday announced its new ship will be named Norwegian Luna and will sail out of Miami beginning in 2026.

A sister ship to the forthcoming Norwegian Aqua, both are larger versions of the line’s latest Prima class of vessels known as Prima Plus. The ships are 10% larger than 2022’s Prima and 2023’s Viva, coming in at 1,056 feet long, 156,300 gross tons and a 3,550-passenger capacity based on double occupancy. It’s still smaller than the line’s popular Breakaway Plus class ships Escape, Joy, Bliss and Encore.

The ship will debut in March 2026 sailing Caribbean voyages from PortMiami less than a year after Norwegian Aqua’s planned debut out of Port Canaveral. Both will be delivered from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.

“Inspired by the relationship between the moon and the tides of the ocean, we are excited to introduce Norwegian Luna as the vessel that perfectly complements her sister ship, Norwegian Aqua,” said NCL President David J. Herrera in a press release.

Both ships will feature what NCL is calling the Aqua Slidecoaster, a hybrid rollercoaster and water slide that the line promises to be the longest and fastest slides at sea.

It features dual slides with a magnetic lift that propels riders up quickly before venturing on one of two courses that will descend three decks on a twisting path that travels around the ship’s funnel.

Luna promises a digital sports complex called the Glow Court as well, that will host interactive activities during the day, but become a nightclub in the evening.

Similar to the Prima and Viva ships as well as Aqua, Luna will have a 10-deck free-fall slide called The Drop and a top-deck sports and outdoor gaming space called The Stadium.

The ship’s name is well represented by its artwork including the hull design titled “La Luna” from street artist ELLE, who is now based in Napa, California but gained fame first in New York.

The bow features a massive full moon while moonbeams, clouds, birds and signs of the Zodiac branch out across the entire length of the side of the ship.

“When people are getting on Norwegian Luna, they’re embarking on a voyage, and I wanted the ship’s artwork to reflect this. I wanted it to be an epic voyage on the side, an adventure,” she said.  “It’s been an incredible experience crafting this piece and knowing my 1,056-foot piece of artwork will sail across the seas, traveling the globe for all to see.”

One of its higher-end features will be the three-bedroom duplex Haven suites, also set to be on Aqua. The two-deck suites are part of the exclusive ship-within-a-ship area on board with its own sundeck, infinity pool, outdoor spa, private lounge and bar.

Similar to all Prima-class vessels, the ship will feature Ocean Boulevard, a 46,000-square-foot outdoor walkway wrapping around the ship and the popular Indulge Food Hall with 10 different food stations including the new veg-focused Plantterie that’s debuting on Aqua.

It will also be the second ship after Aqua with new Thai specialty restaurant Sukhotahi augmenting Cagney’s Steakhouse, French restaurant Le Bistro and Italian venue Onda by Scarpeta.

And drinks can be found at the Whiskey Bar, Belvedere Bar, and Metropolitan, which features sustainable cocktails and win.

After its March debut, the ship will sail a pair of western Caribbean itineraries beginning April 4, 2026 and then settle into seven-night Eastern Caribbean sailings through November 2026.

Norwegian Luna will be the cruise line’s 21st ship with voyages available for booking at ncl.com.
