Holidays at the theme parks: What’s new?

Holidays at the theme parks: What’s new?

It’s that sentimental time of year when folks drag out their tattered stockings, beloved ornaments and other remembrances of holidays seasons past.

Theme park fans have annual favorites too, like Candlelight Processional at Epcot, “O Wondrous Night” stage show at SeaWorld Orlando and the appearance of Max the dog during “Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular” at Universal’s Islands of Adventure.

But Central Florida attractions have rolled out new activities for our holiday inspection. After all, old faves have to start somewhere. Here’s a sampler of fresh fare, right out of the oven.

Ball game

The Epcot International Festival of the Holidays has expanded to include an 8-foot-tall gingerbread Spaceship Earth. And it twinkles. It took 240 pounds of honey dough to make the sphere, Disney says, and there are six different sizes of triangles involved.

The structure is set up inside CommuniCore Hall, another new Epcot hotspot, where visitors also can buy a SSE-inspired triangular piece of gingerbread at the Experimental Prototype Cookies of Tomorrow counter. They go for $10.

The event runs through Dec. 30.

Other Disney-releated newbies include Epcot’s Festive Fragrances displays; the “Glisten” ice-skating show during Disney Jollywood Nights, the separately ticketed holiday event at Disney’s Hollywood Studios; and, at Disney Springs, store windows at World of Disney activated by MagicBand+.  (They work on some of the participants of the Christmas Tree Stroll, too)

New tree on the block

Legoland Florida has introduced a new Christmas tree that’s 32 feet tall and made of 365,000 Lego and Duplo bricks. Other new activities at the Winter Haven park include Elf Training Academy, the arrival of Lego Elf characters Frode and Ivy plus the Holly Hype Dance Party.

Legoland celebrates through Dec. 31, although some offerings are available only on select dates.

Redecorating

SeaWorld Orlando has leaned into new holiday decor for its Journey to Atlantis Plaza, which features the Snow Globe Ballerina. The Antarctica area has “snowy Christmas ambiance” and the Donder Elves. Among the new items on SeaWorld’s treat list: Kris Kringle’s biscuit pot pie, Santa’s apple cider cronut chicken sandwich and a bourbon cranberry old-fashioned.

SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration – which also has Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Three Kings moments scheduled – goes through Jan. 5. More info: seaworldorlando.com.

Book it

The Holiday Tribute Story this season at Universal Studios works with a pop-up book theme, featuring merchandise and photo opportunities revolving around “Hogsmeade for Christmas,” fiction out of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter; “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” from Dr. Seuss; and Earl the Squirrel, a pesky little holiday mascot that emerged out of the park itself.

Holiday festivities run at Universal and Islands of Adventure through Dec. 31. For more information, go to universalorlando.com.

Ain’t seen nothing, Yeti

Museum of Illusions Orlando had added a Yeti-themed scavenger hunt called Frostbite’s Winterland Adventure. The elusive creature looms throughout the Icon Park attraction, adding holiday photo ops to the mind-bending scenery.

The activity will be offered through Jan. 31. More information: moiorlando.com.

Making history

Orange County Regional History Center has added the Historic Holiday Experience, which includes ornament decoration, festive crafting, storytelling and a private visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The 90-minute sessions at the downtown Orlando museum are held three times per night on select evenings through Dec. 18.

The history center also is showing “Ernest Saves Christmas,” a 1988 movie filmed in Orlando, on Dec. 19. Admission is free, but online registration is requested.

Extended elf life

Gaylord Palms is presenting, for the first time anywhere, the 2003 film “Elf” as part of its annual ICE exhibit. The carved-by-hand displays portray the film, incorporate the snowball fight into the attraction’s traditional slide room and culminate with a crystal-clear nativity scene.

The Kissimmee resort’s holiday festivities run through Jan. 4. More details: tickets.gaylordpalms.com.

To market

Dezerland Park on International Drive is hosting the Orlando Holiday Market for the first time Dec. 7-8. It will feature more than 150 artisans and crafters selling wares inside the attraction.

Operating hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
