Plans for a new ship in the works for Celebrity Cruises
The Edge-class party won’t be done with the debut of Celebrity Xcel later this year as a sixth ship in the popular class was just ordered by Celebrity Cruises’ parent company Royal Caribbean Group.
The agreement contingent on financing was announced Tuesday with French shipyard Chantiers de l’Atlantique, calling for a sister vessel to be delivered in 2028.
The line currently sails four ships in the groundbreaking class. It stared with 2018’s Celebrity Edge followed by Apex in 2019, Beyond in 2022 and Ascent in 2024, all of which have come to Florida sailing out of Port Everglades in their first year of service. Celebrity Xcel is set to join the fleet this fall also headed to Port Everglades.
The sixth ship for now is being called Edge 6 or Xcel 2.
“The strong ties between Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Royal Caribbean Group have led to the creation of the unique Edge Series design,” said shipyard CEO Laurent Castaing in a press release. “This sixth ship marks the epitome of a pioneering series in the cruise industry that is both elegant, high-performing, and ever more innovative, notably thanks to its methanol capabilities.”
Celebrity Xcel will be the first for any ship in the Royal Caribbean Group family of cruise lines able to use methanol as a fuel source, part of the the company’s effort to reduce its carbon footprint. Plans are for the Xcel 2 ship have that ability as well.
Both Beyond and Ascent were slightly larger than Edge and Apex, but still mid-size ships coming in around 140,600 gross tons and 3,260-passenger capacity.
Chantiers de l’Atlantique has also been building Royal Caribbean’s behemoth vessels, having delivered the world’s largest cruise ship Icon of the Seas that debuted out of PortMiami in early 2024 while also having constructed the sixth Oasis-class vessel Utopia of the Seas that debuted out of Port Canaveral last summer. A new world’s largest cruise ship, Star of the Seas, is set to debut this year as well and sail out of Port Canaveral.
Celebrity Xcel and Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas are two of now eight ships on order for the parent company across all of its brands, which include Silversea Cruises as well as owning a 50% stake in TUI Cruises and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.

All of Celebrity’s Edge-class ships have a similar basic design including the Magic Carpet — an exterior elevator platform that acts primarily as an innovative way for passengers to disembark and reboard the ship when it tenders at ports of call, but also doubles as an entertainment and dining venue.
The ship also feature the popular Infinite Verandah staterooms in which the balcony is part of the cabin.
“Celebrity’s Edge Series redefined premium travel at sea, blending groundbreaking design and unforgettable guest experiences. Each ship in this award-winning series has set a new standard for the industry, and Celebrity Xcel, sailing later this year, is no exception,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group, in a press release.
Details on what exactly will make this year’s Xcel different will be announced Feb. 3, but Celebrity Cruises President Laura Hodges Bethge said it will feature seven new experiences.
“Celebrity Xcel will be the happy place of vacationers globally when she launches in November and we’re thrilled to be making this commitment to bring her a sister ship in Edge 6,” she said.
