Disney World: GoofyCore brings energy, dance craze to Epcot
Gawrsh, there’s a lot of stimulation going on at GoofyCore, the new limited-time activities area at Epcot that’s part of the Cool Kid Summer push at Walt Disney World.
GoofyCore is heavy on sights and sounds but light on smells, thankfully, inside CommuniCore Hall, the theme park’s multi-use space that prompts the event’s, well, kinda goofy name.
The activity starts on ground level with carpeting that doubles as a dance floor and the curvy track of a gigantic game board. Think Candy Land but more neon. In the center of the room is a brightly colored DJ booth — aka Goofy’s Game Machine — made to look like it’s melting.
Giant game cards dangle from the ceiling with characters on one side and instructions (“Oh, boy! Take two turns,” “Strike a pose, collect three bows!”). But on the Disney scale, the theming is pretty subtle.
But something about this space makes kids literally run around in circles. And that’s fine. Burn off that energy. The parents have grown-up furniture on the sides and take deep breaths while watching the circular movements of those kiddos. The young ones have pretty free rein in here until they try to climb up onto the DJ ledge. That’s when kindly cast members swoop into action.

“We are going to dance to every kind of music there is,” the DJ warns, and he spins a wide range of tunes beginning with Jonas Brothers (“Live to Party”) and traveling through the decades to drop in on Chubby Checker doing “The Twist,” Styx and “Mr. Roboto.” The DJ called out for ballet moves leading to “Once Upon a Dream” moments — the DJ did a jete — and that was followed by really young boy banders dancing to “Bye, Bye, Bye.”
But wait, there were also salsa, hip-hop, disco, supermodel struts and high-kick routines. A twentysomething woman broke out a core choreography memory for “We’re All in This Together” from “High School Musical.”
There were also games involving hula hoops and a round of Red Light! Green Light!
All this happened before the arrival of in-the-flesh/plush Goofy, which raised the intensity of the youngest folks. He’s a rock star in this crowd. But the beat goes on, which includes interaction with the character without having to stand in line.
Closing soon: Tom Sawyer Island in July, Rip Ride Rockit in August
It’s the latest incarnation of CommuniCore Hall, which previously has been staged as a museum exhibit, gift shop and festival food kiosk (There’s no food inside in the current version, but there’s a small menu outside that includes Oreo ravioli). I’ve seen a rainy day version of the park’s “Celebracion Encanto” show in there, too.
Another selling point of GoofyCore is its glorious air-conditioning. Goofy must have drawn the long straw and other Cool Kid Summer dance parties are sweating it out at Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Along with dance parties, Disney World is packaging Cool Kid Summer with some discounted park tickets for kids, character interactions and hotel deals into September. For more information, go to disneyworld.com.
Sky and sea
Also new this summer is a drone show that leads into the “Ignite” fireworks show at SeaWorld Orlando.
What visitors see: Drones forming sealife in the sky. That includes floating jellyfish, an electric eel, an enormous tortoise and rays swimming away. Each of these images has some animation to it, adding to the underwater illusion.
SeaWorld Orlando: New emperor penguins set for Florida debut
It’s not drawn out though; of the 12-minute “Ignite” experience, drones are seen for about 5 minutes. And if you’re seated in Bayside Stadium, the scaffolding for Club Sea Glow on the stage can interfere with the air show.
“Ignite” continues to be a big presence, from fountains on the park’s central lake, augmented by fiery effects, lights, music and bursting fireworks all near the park’s signature Sky Tower. The show is not nightly, just on select evenings during the park’s Summer Spectacular nights, which runs through Sept. 1. Check seaworldorlando.com for showtimes and dates.
News and notes
• As MuppetVision 3D was closing at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the company gave an update on the Muppet front via a video featuring Kermit the Frog. The character said the new version of the park’s Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster – featuring Muppets, not Aerosmith – will open in 2026. A closing date for the current version of the attraction has not been released.
• There’s change coming down the tracks for Walt Disney World Railroad. As of July 7, the train will only run between the station at the front of Magic Kingdom and the one at Fantasyland. And word on Main Street is that the engines will run backward in one direction. The shutdown is due to construction in and around Frontierland for the park expansion with “Cars” attractions and a villains-themed land.

• Sea Life Florida Aquarium has opened at Legoland Florida Resort in Winter Haven. Inside: more than 3,000 creatures representing 150 species as well as a 180-degree tunnel designed with a “theme park under the sea” motif.
