Trump says US gets rare earth minerals from China and tariffs on Chinese goods will total 55%

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE, JOSH BOAK, PAUL WISEMAN and DIDI TANG, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that China will make it easier for American industry to obtain much-needed needed magnets and rare earth minerals, clearing the way for talks to continue between the world’s two biggest economies. In return, Trump said, the U.S. will stop efforts to revoke the visas of Chinese nationals on U.S. college campuses.

Trump’s comment on social media came after two days of high-level U.S.-China trade talks in London.

Details remain scarce. Trump didn’t fully spell out what concessions the U.S. made. Beijing has not confirmed what the negotiators agreed to, and Chinese President Xi Jinping and Trump himself have yet to sign off on it.

What Trump described as a “deal’’ is actually less than that: It’s a “framework’’ meant to set the stage for more substantive talks.

And Trump’s own comments created confusion about what was happening to his taxes – tariffs — on Chinese imports, generating uncertainty about more than $660 billion in annual trade between the two countries. read more

Wall Street’s rally stalls as US stocks post their 1st loss in 4 days

Wall Street’s rally stalls as US stocks post their 1st loss in 4 days

By STAN CHOE, AP Business Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street’s rally stalled after stocks climbed back within 2% of their all-time high. The S&P 500 slipped 0.3% Wednesday, marking its first drop in four days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended little changed, and the Nasdaq composite lost 0.5%. The action was stronger in the bond market, where Treasury yields eased after a report showed inflation ticked up by less last month than economists expected. That raised expectations for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates later this year. Markets didn’t react much to the conclusion of two days of trade talks between the U.S. and China.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street’s rally is stalling on Wednesday after U.S. stocks climbed back within 2% of their all-time high.

The S&P 500 was 0.4% lower in late trading and on track for its first drop in four days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 45 points, or 0.1%, with roughly an hour remaining in trading, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.6% lower. read more

Oxygen leak on SpaceX booster forces delay to Axiom Space mission to space station

Oxygen leak on SpaceX booster forces delay to Axiom Space mission to space station

SpaceX called off a planned Wednesday morning launch attempt of the crewed Axiom Space Ax-4 mission to deal with a liquid oxygen leak on the rocket booster.

“Standing down from tomorrow’s Falcon 9 launch of Ax-4 to the @Space_Station to allow additional time for SpaceX teams to repair the LOx leak identified during post static fire booster inspections,” SpaceX posted on X late Tuesday. “Once complete – and pending Range availability – we will share a new launch date.”

The Ax-4 mission was aiming for an 8 a.m. liftoff with weather concerns looking to potentially delay the flight, but in the end hardware issues made those moot. Now forced to wait are Axiom Space employee and former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson commanding a crew customers paid for by the governments of India and Hungary as well as Poland through the European Space Agency.

“Human spaceflight’s really core to SpaceX’s ultimate mission and flying crew safely is always our top priority,” said SpaceX’s William Gerstenmaier, vice president of Build and Flight Reliability, during a Monday press call when he first discussed finding the leak. “Spaceflight is really hard, and we’re learning every day. The more we fly, the more we learn.” read more
