Supreme Court blocks, for now, OxyContin maker bankruptcy deal that would shield Sacklers

By Mark Sherman, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Thursday temporarily blocked a nationwide settlement with OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma that would shield members of the Sackler family who own the company from civil lawsuits over the toll of opioids.

The justices agreed to a request from the Biden administration to put the brakes on an agreement reached last year with state and local governments. In addition, the high court will hear arguments before the end of the year over whether the settlement can proceed.

The deal would allow the company to emerge from bankruptcy as a different entity, with its profits used to fight the opioid epidemic. Members of the Sackler family would contribute up to $6 billion.

But a key component of the agreement would shield family members, who are not seeking bankruptcy protection as individuals, from lawsuits.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Trustee, represented by the Justice Department, opposes releasing the Sackler family from legal liability. read more

Universal: New Minion attraction aims for repeat business

Universal: New Minion attraction aims for repeat business

Universal Orlando wants visitors to ride its new Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast over and over and over again. And then again. The interactive attraction, based on characters from the “Despicable Me” films, was designed that way from the start, its creators say.

“We knew that this was going to be popular, specifically among a certain subset of people that come to the park — annual passholders, fans, people who like to play video games,” said Carson Luter, associate project manager with Universal Creative.

After weeks of previews and technical rehearsals, Minion Blast officially opens to the public at Universal Studios on Friday. It’s part of the new Minion Land on Illumination Avenue area near the entrance of the park.  The area also includes Minion Cafe, Bake My Day bakery, a new meet-and-greet stop and food stands that sell items such banana-flavored popcorn and themed popsicles.

They’re all adjacent to Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, the simulator attraction that opened in 2012. read more
