Princess Cruises taps famed butcher, magicians for Florida-bound Sun Princess

Princess Cruises has been revealing some of the features that will be on its new class of ship Sun Princess set to debut next year, including specialty venues tied to a famous Italian butcher and an iconic Hollywood magicians club.

Foodie fans might hear the echoes of butcher Dario Cecchini exclaiming his love for carne (Italian for “meat”) as they venture into his new restaurant, a bistro called The Butcher’s Block by Dario.

Cecchini has appeared on shows like “Top Chef” over the years and most recently was featured on Netflix’s “Chef’s Table.” His exuberance for butchery has been handed down through eight generations and honed over nearly five decades working in his butcher shop and restaurants based in Panzano, Italy, a small village in Tuscany.

“Princess’ culinary offerings embody a rich Italian heritage, uniting a shared passion for family recipes, vibrant social dining and a love of celebrating each day of life,” Cecchini said with a little translation help in a press release. “My life as an artesian butcher holds deep significance because I hold profound respect for the gift of the animal and ensure that shines through when guests enjoy my new restaurant and delectable menus sailing the world on the beautiful Sun Princess.”

The bistro will feature family-style dining with Cecchini’s signature cuts of meat. His upscale menu items will also make their way into the ship’s signature steakhouse Crown Grill.

That includes “Bistecca Alla Fiorentina,” a bone-in Florentine steak sourced directly from his Antica Macelleria Cecchini butcher shop in Panzano.

Another celebrity partnership coming to Sun Princess is with Hollywood landmark Magic Castle, a private club for the Academy of Magical Arts that has hosted famous magicians for invitation-only performances. The cruise ship venue, Spellbound by Magic Castle, will combine magic with mixology.

Hidden behind a secretive door on the ship, once inside, the venue will evoke Victorian-era stylings amid themed rooms where servers will perform sleight-of-hand tricks while delivering theatrical cocktails.

Décor will include magical artifacts, vintage curiosities and interactive special effects amid the Music Room, home to the spirit of Isabella, who has her own Sun Princess tales to tell; the Parlor Bar where guests will interact with Artemis the owl with the help of illusionists; and the 30-seat Spellbound theater for an up-close magic show.

“We are bringing some of the most authentic aspects of the Magic Castle in Hollywood to Sun Princess, complete with incredible magicians and illusionists, so that Princess guests can experience a taste of the world class magic that is showcased nightly at the Magic Castle,” said Erika Larsen, president of Magic Castle Enterprises in a press release. “It’s an exciting opportunity for guests to immerse themselves in a magical experience typically reserved exclusively for members and their guests.”

The two venues are among 29 smaller food and beverage options coming on board the ship debuting in February 2024 and set to sail out of Port Everglades when it arrives in Florida after a summer season sailing in the Mediterranean.

That includes Kai Sushi, Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria, Umai Teppanyaki and seafood offering The Catch by Rudi in collaboration with Chef Rudi Sodamin, the Head of Culinary Art at Princess who also has venues on sister cruise lines Holland America and Carnival. Other venues include Alfredo’s Pizzeria, O’Malley’s Irish Pub, Bellini’s Cocktail Bar, Coffee Currents, Crooners, Wheelhouse Bar, Good Spirits At Sea and World Fresh Marketplace among others. Also new to Sun Princess will be the three-deck Horizons main dining room and the suite-exclusive Signature Restaurant and Lounge.

“Princess is dedicated to creating the finest experiences for guests spanning all cultures, tastes and preferences,” said Princess Cruise Line President John Padgett.

The 21-deck ship remains under construction at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy. It will be the cruise line’s largest vessel at 175,500 gross tons and a 4,314-passenger capacity based on double occupancy. It’s the first of the line’s new Sphere class of ships, and will run on liquefied natural gas, part of parent company Carnival Corp.’s efforts to reduce emissions. The new ship promises the most balconies in its fleet

The cruise line’s last ships, 2022’s Discovery Princess, 2020’s Enchanted Princess and 2019’s Sky Princess, come in at around 145,000 gross tons with about 3,660-passenger capacities.

This is the third time the cruise line has brought back the Sun Princess name, with earlier versions having sailed from 1974-1988 and 1995-2020. A sister ship to the new Sun Princess, Star Princess, is due to the line in spring 2025.
