Billionaire Richard Branson invests in Space Perspective, to fly on its 1st human space balloon flight

Richard Branson already saw the blackness of space traveling at nearly Mach 3 with his company Virgin Galactic. Now he’s going to take a slower approach.

The billionaire is investing in Space Perspective, the Space Coast-based space balloon venture, and will join its founders on the space tourism operation’s first human test flight planned next year. He flew to space on board Virgin Galactic’s VSS Unity in 2021, but has a history of extreme ballooning adventures, once attempting to circumnavigate the globe.

“Some of the most magnificent experiences of my life have happened on ballooning expeditions and I’m excited to support Space Perspective in its journey,” Branson said in a press release. “I’m passionate about adventure and helping fellow entrepreneurs reach their business dreams. I look forward to dusting off my old ballooning license ahead of some magnificent test flights.”

The company announced last week that Branson will act as copilot for the flight, which is designed to take passengers on a slow two-hour ride up to 100,000 feet altitude, where it will hang out for another two hours before a two-hour descent. read more

GoFundMe bets social media can unlock Gen Z giving. A Meta partnership and new tools will test that

GoFundMe bets social media can unlock Gen Z giving. A Meta partnership and new tools will test that

By JAMES POLLARD

NEW YORK (AP) — New GoFundMe tools will make it easier to circulate causes across online platforms in a push to cater toward younger generations.

The crowdfunding site hopes to meet digital natives in the online spaces where they frequently advocate, streamlining the donation experience to encourage more charity and connecting traditional nonprofits with a demographic that prefers direct contributions over institutional giving. Among the features rolling out this fall are fundraising widgets for video game streamers, personalized profiles to highlight users’ philanthropic interests and an integrated button on Instagram to donate.

“We play a really important role helping people ask for help and give help in the world,” GoFundMe CEO Tim Cadogan told The Associated Press. “We want to make sure that people can carry that with them, and communicate and express that, in the places where they spend time.”

The products reflect the for-profit company’s internal recognition that Gen Z’s habits make social media an untapped source to drive charitable contributions. Gen Z respondents ages 18-26 are much more likely than older people to regularly share causes or fundraisers on their accounts, according to a survey led this summer by GoFundMe. Half reported doing so at least once a week and 41% said social media content compelled them to research or support a cause. read more

Royal Caribbean’s Port Canaveral-bound Star of the Seas to feature ‘Back to the Future’ musical

Royal Caribbean’s Port Canaveral-bound Star of the Seas to feature ‘Back to the Future’ musical

Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas will have something no cruise line has ever had before when it debuts out of Port Canaveral in 2025: A time machine.

It’s a DeLorean, and needs 1.21 gigawatts of electricity generated by a nuclear reaction to power the flux capacitor, which makes time travel possible. That’s the word or Emmett “Doc” Brown, of course, one of the characters who will be spouting science and singing songs alongside Marty McFly, parents George and Lorraine, as well as foil Biff Tannen as part of the cruise line’s production of “Back to the Future: The Musical.”

The cruise line revealed Monday that the play will be the marquee offering on board what will be the largest cruise ship in the world, a sister ship to Icon of the Seas that debuted out of Miami earlier this year.

“Blast to the past and introduce the entire family to Marty McFly’s high-flying adventure, as ‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ travels straight from Broadway to Star of the Seas.” the line promoted on its website. “From cult-classic movie to instant-hit musical, this Olivier Award winner is making waves on land — and now you can experience it at sea.” read more

Disney names Gorman to serve as next chairman; anticipates naming new CEO in early 2026

Disney names Gorman to serve as next chairman; anticipates naming new CEO in early 2026

The Walt Disney Co. is tapping Morgan Stanley executive James Gorman to serve as its next chairman, beginning early next year. The entertainment giant also announced that it anticipates naming its new CEO in early 2026.

Gorman will become chairman on Jan. 2, 2025. He will succeed Mark Parker, who is leaving after serving on Disney’s board for nine years.

Gorman is currently chair of Disney’s succession planning committee. He serves as executive chairman at Morgan Stanley, but will be stepping down from that post at the end of the year. Gorman previously served as Morgan Stanley’s CEO from 2010 to 2023 and chairman from 2012 to 2023.

Gorman has previous succession planning experience, as he oversaw the process at Morgan Stanley.

“The Disney board has benefited tremendously from James Gorman’s expertise and guidance, and we are lucky to have him as our next chairman – particularly as the board continues to move forward with the succession process,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement on Monday. read more

Most voters think the economy is poor, but split on whether Trump or Harris can fix it: poll

Most voters think the economy is poor, but split on whether Trump or Harris can fix it: poll

By STEVE PEOPLES and LINLEY SANDERS

WASHINGTON (AP) — Voters remain largely divided over whether they prefer Republican Donald Trump or Democrat Kamala Harris to handle key economic issues, although Harris earns slightly better marks on elements such as taxes for the middle class, according to a new poll.

A majority of registered voters in the survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research describe the economy as poor. About 7 in 10 say the nation is going in the wrong direction.

But the findings reaffirm that Trump has lost what had been an advantage on the economy, which many voters say is the most important issue this election season above abortion, immigration, crime and foreign affairs.

“Do I trust Trump on the economy? No. I trust that he’ll give tax cuts to his buddies like Elon Musk,” said poll respondent Janice Tosto, a 59-year-old Philadelphia woman and self-described independent.

An AP-NORC poll conducted in September found neither Harris nor Trump had a clear advantage on handling “the economy and jobs.” But this poll asked more specific questions about whether voters trusted Trump or Harris to do a better job handling the cost of housing, jobs and unemployment, taxes on the middle class, the cost of groceries and gas, and tariffs. read more
