For teens, traditional summer job may work better than side gig

Teens looking for summer work may think “side hustles” and social media are the only ways to make money.

“What we hear from a lot of young people is that they’d rather try to start a business than have traditional jobs,” says Ed Grocholski, chief marketing officer of Junior Achievement USA, an organization that helps young people prepare for career success.

It’s easy to see why teens are excited. Social media influencers appear to be cashing in on their images and hobbies, and side hustle culture makes it look more feasible than ever to market and sell a product or service. But what teens might not realize is that early entrepreneurial endeavors usually take time to take off. Put another way, they don’t provide steady pay.

SpaceX calls off late-night Cape Canaveral launch

Weather didn’t cooperate for a SpaceX satellite launch overnight on what would have been the 26th launch for the Space Coast in 2023, and a backup opportunity that opens late Wednesday could also be stymied by storms.

A Falcon 9 carrying the Arabsat BADR-8 telecommunications satellite headed for geosynchronous orbit had a 127-minute launch window that opened at 11:25 p.m., but SpaceX kept pushing the target liftoff time as storms passed over Central Florida throughout the night.

The backup opportunity from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station’s Space Launch Complex 40 opens again at 11:25 p.m. Wednesday that runs through 1:32 a.m. Thursday.

Space Launch Delta 45’s weather squadron updated its forecast Tuesday afternoon predicting only a 30% chance for good conditions at the opening of the window, but improving to 50% by the end of the window Wednesday. The forecast for the backup of Wednesday night into Thursday morning, though, calls for only a 25% chance for good conditions.

It’s the fourth night launch planned for SpaceX this month with three previous successful Starlink missions from Cape Canaveral lighting up the sky in the wee hours. read more
